Its too bad Kishimoto couldn't really recreate what he had in the first arc of the series, although the closest he got was in the SRA. Its still a good series, but it has definitely never reached its former glory.

It was pure storytelling genius. It was really a coming of age story for the characters as well as the series. So much tension, so much feeling, so much childhood emotion and discovery of one's soul among all the characters present. Naruto's quest for being acknowledged from being totally disrespected in the beginning with no one caring about him. To later earning Sasuke's respect when he revealed he wanted to fight him, then at the end with Gaara where he said "Uzumaki Naruto, eh?", when in the beginning he was one of the people who didn't even want to know his name.

COMPLETELY AGREE. I loved the character development in this arc too, and the storytelling, the way everything was tied together including Gaara's development, Lee's injury, Naruto's clash with Sasuke -- was just brilliant complexity. It has to be one of my favorite arcs, if not THE arc. :)

Eh disagree went back and watched it and it was good, but not really as hyped as I was when I was a kid.
