Tom Riddle (Voldemort) is like Orochimaru and Kabuto in one person.

Like Kabuto and Orochimaru, he was an orphan emotionally screwed by the pattern of life.

Like Oro, he had an intrinsic streak of evil that manifested itself more and more as he grew up. And both of course have their snake affiliation and have been labelled geniuses. And again, they both were weakened during their lives (Body rejection, old magic), and both have been revived thanks to their living on inside other things (Anko, Horcruxes).

Oh yeah, and both are obsessed with immortality.

Plus like Oro and Kabuto, they both end up seeking more and more power (Kabuto nicks Oro's cells who himself played with people's body to get their juices and of course Voldy nicks the Elder Wand from a grave (classy)).

The only major differences are that Voldemort stayed evil until the end; Oro mellowed and Kabuto was "touched" and that Orochimaru > Hiruzen whereas Dumbledore > Voldemort. And that Dumbly was nerfed in the movies whereas Hiruzen wasn't in the anime

I wonder how many people actually know that Dumbledore is by far the strongest Wizard in the entire series. Now, I only read the first three books and watched up to the third movie, but I read a lot about the strongest Wizards, and it's really no competition. Dumbledore essentially beat the strongest Wizard of his time (forgot his name) who had the Elder Wand, without his own Elder Wand, and even in his old age where it was even stated he was what, half his power, he could still MATCH the prime version of Voldemort who was seen in the finality of the series. It's just obscene that Dumbledore was that much stronger than everyone. A fully healthy, young Voldemort with the Elder Wand is unfathomable to think about.

But to address what you said in the OP, I agree wholeheartedly. You can also add that in the beginning of both of their descents to darkness, Orochimaru tempted Sasuke by marking him with the Curse Mark, whereas Voldemort forever linked himself to Harry by marking him on his forehead.

In the books (as I remember), Dumbledore wasn't going with intent to kill and he was fighting Voldemort and Bellatrix simultaneously but dealt with the latter quite easily, despite Voldy on his back and protecting Harry too. Voldemort was throwing around a lot of killing curses too, but he just negged them by apparating around.

Oh, and his name was Grindelwald too. But yeah, it was a four hour duel and said to be the greatest in history by witnesses.

It's hard to tell really.

It depends on how strong Grindelwald was compared to Voldemort, Dumbledore stated that he was "a shade more skilled" than the former. There again, Kingsley, McGonagall and Flitwick(?) stalemated Voldemort with the Elder Wand.

But there I'm making it sound like those three aren't good in their own right, when Flitwick's a champion dueller and Gonny was Dumbledore's right hand woman.

Grindelwald's hard to place, it's made to seem like he's second to Voldemort but a young Dumbledore had to engage him for four hours to defeat him... there again he didn't have the Elder Wand.
