I've gotta say, the ending left me very satisfied, and I don't understand, did knives join vash? Did he become good in the end? I don't seem to get that part when he appears for brief moment at the tree with a frowning facial expression. but nonetheless the end happened pretty fast, but I really enjoyed the manga.

Yes it is a great manga series. Knives just disappears , but he doesn't seem "evil" anymore. He really cared for "his brother" and that's what "changed" him "in the end". They should animate Trigun Maximum. The Badlands Rumble movie was really good, but the Trigun anime series was more on the boring side for me. Trigun Maximum is much more exciting. The manga's final confrontation was short in the end because it was so long and drawn out before that, plus they didn't want to duplicate what the anime had done before. Wolfwood's arc was pretty long , but it was great imo. Legato and The Crimson Nail and all the characters you mentioned in the OP were great.

If you haven't read Akira, you should read that.
