Sorry if this is a bit long, I just felt like I needed to praise this anime.
So I finally finished watching "Monster" and I must say, I think this is undoubtedly the best anime I've seen. I've watch a lot of anime and yes I have nostolgia for a lot of them but "Monster is nothing like any of them. It's just so well written and the moral themes present within the anime really stick out. Not to mention it doesn't try to be cliche.
The characters feel real and the setting is in Germany/Prague, which makes it stick out even more since most anime usually take place is Japan, America, or a fictional land. The protagonist is just a normal guy, aside for being a brilliant surgeon, who had the misfortune of being dragged into something that would shake the foundations of Germany. We get to see how his previous notions of good and evil are tested and we see his character develop from fragile to sturdy.
The villain is quite possibly the best there is in any anime. He is presented as an enigma and is a true mastermind who's goals are remained secret until the ending. To put it simply, this anime was just amazing and it was actually moving. When characters died or faced betrayal, I actually felt sad for them. There were moments that I didn't expect, the anime always kept me guessing till the very end.
It is not your typical anime with swords and monsters and even though I prefer those types of anime over the more serious sorts, there's still a clear difference between a fun anime and great one. "Monster" is most definitely a great anime and I highly recommend it. It may not be for everyone given its slow pace, but having the patience to watch through it will yield a fantastic experience.
