I was debating whether or not to post this, because it's personal... and depressing, but, here goes..

Cancer Sucks

Your locks cascaded in a multitude
Whilst adding to your pulchritude,
Retaining fiery vibrancy that’s nowadays quite rare.
Then came the chemotherapy
To fight the harsh barbarity
Of cancer cells that loomed to steal away that bright red hair.
That disease, ever malicious,
With demeanor avaricious
Had a damned, devilish duty and a body to impair.
Soon the cancer grew aggressive
With a grip far too possessive,
Granting grievances and forcing you back to hospital care.
It drenched your skin in sickly tones
And leeched the marrow from your bones,
Masking your complexion that had once been very fair.
But you still fought off that muck
With a shirt saying: “cancer sucks,”
Unrelenting to the symptoms that had locked you in a snare.
You would never call it fate
Or suddenly capitulate
To an ailment that was always deemed unwelcome and unfair.
But then your bodily organs failed
In the place from which they hailed,
No longer able to contain the cancer sucking at your air.
So softly you closed your eyes
As you met your slow demise,
Buried by a billowy tree, leaves scattering everywhere.
Sealed in an everlasting slumber,
No more burdens, one less cumber
To attack you in your grace, in your deep, eternal lair.
It’s been a year now that you’re gone,
But we still can’t just move on,
And I hope if there’s a heaven I may someday meet you there.

In memory of my aunt... And for anyone else who lost someone to cancer.
