Its pretty late to post this, as the movie has been out for quite a while, but I felt it had many interesting connections to some manga out there (spoilers ahead).
First, the process of the alien race killing and taking over of other planets was not unlike the Saiyan takeover of planets in DBZ. They would kill all life on the planet in order to claim it as their own and sell it later.
The movie was even more closely relatable to FMA. The collection of humans and synthesizing their raw elements...... they were creating Philosipher Stones. Its literally the identical concept, the collection of human bodies/ souls for the soul purpose of making oneself immortal.
I found it quite interesting.
