Incorrect, he did not become a "villain" he was never a true "villain" he is what is called an Anti-Hero, he is willing to go to places Batman would never go, and Batman acknowledges that and will even recommend others to him that need those types of jobs done, even though he doesn't fully agree with his methods.

Also on topic yes that Robin is Jason Todd the second Robin. The arc he was killed in was called "A Death In The Family"
