Between the amazing d0kid0ki and myself, together we have come up with a broad (though long) Theory/Explaination as to why the Hyuga associate so much with the Yin-Yang symbol, and even branch off to reveal how the Yin-Yang reflects with the Story on its own! As always…what is the point of learning secrets if they have no meaning? Rest assured, I have applied it to some of physical situations currently ongoing in the manga as well as its symbolic presence.
With the understanding that this theory is incredibly detailed with information and examples….We have decided to make short and sweet summaries that leave out a fair part of the details and supporting evidence, and focus on the claims in a conclusion
To start off, we will list some more physical/historic ties the Hyuga clan has, and later go into the symbolic meanings.
First and foremost, the entire Hyuga Clan fighting style (Gentle Fist), is based on an ancient Chinese style called Baguazhang, but Kishimoto has also mixed in the art of T’ai chi ch’uan. These fighting styles both have relations to the Yin-Yang.
With some research I learned some basic principles of Baguazhang. The Following are some quotes from Wikipedia where I researched the style “ The practice of circle walking, or "turning the circle", as it is sometimes called, is Baguazhang's characteristic method of stance and movement training. All forms of Baguazhang utilize circle walking prevalently as an integral part of training. Baguazhang contains an extremely wide variety of techniques as well as weapons, including various strikes (with palm, fist, elbow, fingers, etc.), kicks, joint locks, throws, and distinctively evasive circular footwork.”
Now to provide an example of what “Circle Walking” is, I nabbed a video from YouTube….after maybe 30 seconds of the video you get the general Idea XD!
Now also from those 30 seconds and the quotes notice several key things:
1. The style has an emphasis on using palm thrusts which is a typical Hyuga move. Not only that, but their ranged moves are called, “Vacuum Air Palm and Vacuum Wall Palm”.
2. The stage the man in the video is walking around happens to contain the Yin-Yang symbol…notably the Hyuga Clan’s Symbol as shown in the picture below.
3. The stance the man in the video uses is vaguely similar to the Hyuga stance…notice how in the video and Hinata’s stance in the picture below…their ands are similarly positioned. One hand extended, one kept back near the core of the body, and palms are up.
Lastly, this fighting style’s roots are associated with Taoism and Buddhism which deal with balance, and thus once again, the Yin-Yang.
First, we will start with the name actual name given to the Yin-Yang which is the Taijitu.
The Taijitu is the visual design element of the Yin-Yang, and translates to trigram of ultimate power.
This is interesting for two reasons. Firstly, taijitu sounds a lot like like taijutsu, which the Hyuuga clan excel at in their own style of Gentle Fist. Secondly, the meaning, trigram of ultimate power, well... the Hyuuga's clan moves are spoken as "Eight trigrams [insert specificity here]."
Speaking of Eight trigrams, let's back track with two little parts of more historical information just to clarify and enlighten.
1. What are the eight trigrams?
First, a picture:
Ba Gua, or “Eight Trigrams”, is a philosophical concept that is a part of the “trinity” of natural principles. The philosophical trinity includes: 1) Yin & Yang (the two complimentary forces); 2) the Wu Xing, or “Five Elements” (the “balance” and “interaction” of these forces); and 3) the Ba Gua (the constant “changing” of these forces).
The five elements... just like the five nature affinities in the series, as well as the five nature affinities of the Rikkudo Sennin. *NOTE: As you may have noticed, the Ba Gua is actually the initial part of the BAGUAzhang fighting style…effectively tying in the Baguazhang and T’ai chi ch’uan*
2. look at Bat Quai Do, a Taijitu with the Eight Trigrams.
Bat Quai Do (Ba Gua Do) is an art that completely allows you to release your inner strength and helps you to concentrate your body's energy into a single point for a sudden release of power, possibly like a Jyuuken strike?
Back to Taijitu, we should look at T'ai chi ch'uan, as it translates to "supreme ultimate fist," and it is also a hard and soft martial art. The legendary figure who is credited with T'ai chi ch'uan is Zhang Sanfeng, a practitioner of Neijia, an internal practice of strength. [Reminded us of Neji, but probably unrelated.]
Moving on to more manga related examples of the Yin-Yang’s appearances, and possible ties the Hyuga would have.
Let’s Start by analyzing this image.
Now for those who’d immediately say what do the Hyuga have with the Sage of Six Paths or this scene, please read the following Theory:
If you are too lazy…to sum up what is key to pick up about it is that the Hyuga are related to the Sage of Six Paths..though, there are other indirect parts in the theory that has no point to the relationship.
So first off we see that the Yin-Yang Symbol appears at the centerfold of the Juubi’s eye (or at least in the Drawing of the eye that is a close up of the one behind the Sage). As d0kid0ki points out, the Sage also has a bright white like fire, and a black like fire (a Yin-Yang reference).
A question one may ask is how can we relate the flames that the Sage is holding to the Hyuga/Yin-Yang other than a vague black/white coloration difference. Well, the answer is in one of the two dominant symbols that represent the Hyuga Clan.
The Hyuuga clan is represented with the flame symbol, but also the yin-yang.
It is possible that this is the actual clan symbol (even though Narutopedia indicates the Yin-Yang design as their primary symbol). This symbol is shaped like the flames held by Rikkudo Sennin.
These two flames, or what the Hyuuga clan has used as a figure head symbol, are placed (as we mentioned before) in black and white representing the the Yin-Yang symbol, and thus may represent the Hyuga who have roots with the symbol.
Now to begin with the Symbolic meaning of the Yin-Yang.
Right off the bat, the Yin-Yang symbol represents how seemingly opposite or conflicting existences (light and dark, hot and cold) are actually interdependent and as such a symbol of balance.
Directly applied to the Hyuga Clan, the Yin-Yang was first used in describing the Main and Side Branches. The Side branch origionaly existing to protect the Main Branch, and the Main Branch relying on the Side Branches in order to be preserved.
On the title cover of Chapter 79: The Hyuga Clan, and there are two ways it could be represented.
1. It ironically places the seemingly light character (Hinata) as the white dot (light) surrounded by black (darkness), and Neji as the black dot (darkness: but more like lost/confused) surrounded by white (the light of his genius skills).
2. Hinata is light surrounded by Neji's darkness/negativity. He tries to bring her into it, as he believes she deserves that position. Neji is dark surrounded by Hinata's light. She tries to bring him out of the darkness and into the light, as she represents purity.
Now let us return to our image of the Rikkudo Sennin
First off let’s analyze the eye. The Yin-Yang here may symbolically represent that the balance that now exists. The Light and Justice of the Rikkudo Sage and the Darkness and Power of the Juubi.
On an even broader sense, the flames may even represent his sons. The Elder Son shrouded in the dark flame, and the Younger Son as the White Flame. Since Japanese people read from Right to Left…technically the Black Flame would in fact be coming first.
This also brings the sense that Uchiha (and their Hyuga allies) are balanced out by the Senju (and their Uzumaki allies) as this scene also ties into the ever existing conflict that came from the Sage’s Descendants.
With the concept that the Yin-Yang deals with balance, and that it is related to the Hyuga, this means that the Hyuga will be needed to bring balance. We already have proof of this as the Hyuga were standing at the forefront of the battlefield to try and stop the evil brought by Obito, Madara, and the Juubi.
If Hinata does in fact advance the Byakugan (refer to the thread link that was listed towards the start of the thread), she will play a pivotal role in restoring balance…possibly playing the role of light to help balance the darkness of the Juubi….much like the Sage of Six Paths *Note: I am not implying Hinata is some second Sage of Six Paths…simply saying she will be performing part of a similar action*.
The Juubi may also be simply sealed away in Naruto, some other member of the Alliance, or even in some other space. As such, it is possible the Uzumaki 8 trigrams seal may be used.
While it may not directly even involve the Hyuga, it is certainly coincidental that the 8 trigrams are a part of the sealing jutsu considering how the Hyuga have strong ties to it. Even more coincidental is that Orochimaru’s 8 trigrams Seal is even closer to the symbol the Hyuga use (this hints that possibly this is an advanced Hyuga or Uzumaki technique considering the Hyuga themselves also have some knowledge of seals as indicated by the curse mark.
To put it in a condensed and less mind-frying way, this will summarize all of the above. This theory/explanation was made to give us a look as to why the Hyuga are associated with the Yin-Yang symbol. It also deviates at times to show the Yin-Yang’s concept of balance working on its own in the Narutoverse.
To keep it short, the Yin-Yang is associated with the Hyuga for their fighting style. Baguazhang and T’ai chi ch’uan are two fighting styles that were brought together to form the Gentle Fist style. The Yin-Yang is ever present in the styles due to their Taoism backgrounds.
This Taoism background brings up a “Trinity” which includes the Yin-Yang, five elements of balance, and 8 trigrams (all of which exist in the Narutoverse as well as associate with the Hyuga).
As a symbolic figure, the Yin-Yang represents balance in the Narutoverse with various examples such as Rikkudo and the Juubi balancing each other out, Uchiha and Hyuga balancing out with the Senju and Uzumaki (displayed by the black and white fire that the Sage is shown wielding during the Obito vs Konan fight), and within Hyuga and Uchiha the Hyuga represent a lightness within the darkness.
Directly to the Hyuga clan, the Yin-Yang has symbolized Hinata being a light or pure person surrounded by the darkness of Neji’s oppression and her own negative feelings. At the same time, Neji a black dot surrounded by the light of his genius and Hinata trying to bring him up as an equal person in status.
Also directed to the Hyuga, the Yin-Yang shows that the Main and Side branch, while seemingly in competition, relied on one another to even exist. They Main branch as a light or elite side that labels the existence of the dark Branch family, the Branch family then protecting the main family ensuing that both then survive….Although the Branch Family would view themselves as the oppressed light against the cruel and dark Main Family lol!!!
The above statement refers to the Yin-Yang’s existence as that of a relationship between two forces that, while seemingly like opposite existences (EX: Light vs Dark, or Hot vs Cold), are interdependent in order to exists, and as such are balanced out.
Now…why make a theory if it doesn’t change the story?! Here we go!
It is possible that with the concept of Balance, the Hyuga will be needed in finally crushing the Juubi. This may be done in several different ways. The least likely being Hinata (as a symbol of purity or light) ends up becoming a Jinjuriki of the Juubi (darkness) in a similar fashion to the Sage of Six Paths *note…we are not saying Hinata is in any way a second Sage of Six Paths…just they fill a similar Yin-Yang symbolism*. Alternatively, if Hinata awakens a new eye set, she may play a key role in helping Naruto and the alliance (alliance representing light) defeat or trap the Juubi (representing darnkness). Possibly form of a Yin-Yang sealing technique will be used to defeat the Juubi.
Sasuke’s hatred may be focused on Madara/Obito effectively making him an anti-hero which would be kind of a Yin-Yang of his Hatred (darkness) but willingness not to destroy Konoha out of love for Itachi/Hashirama’s speech (light).
If you didn’t bother to read or want to simply put in a negative comment….simply don’t as we do not wish to waste your time, and since time is a precious commodity we indulge you to spend it better than to waste it with a pointless comment.
Thank you very much for the read. If you were brave enough to read the entire theory….d0kid0ki and I thank you for your patience with our extreme knowledge cache we just dumped on you!
Once again please remember that not only I, but d0kid0ki also deserves the credit for this thread...especially since she was the one who even instigated it in the first place XD!!!
