No this didn't happen in canon. What happened in canon was Madara standing there like an idiot and staring at them , until they decided to attack. Where he forgets about Mokuton, where he forgets about Susanoo. Where he forgets hes a ninja, and his goal is to kill the fodder in front of him.

Now this is most likely what would happen at the start within 1-2 seconds.

Gai can't kill or seal madara ,so the later wins ,not to mention gudoma's shield which gai can't destroy with EE ,and can't touch it in order to destroy it with direct hits or night moth
