Okay, so my last thread was a little too easy for you guys. We're doing the same thing here as in the last thread, comparing their personalities and their story-lines to figure out who's better as a character. We're not measuring their contribution to the main story-line or the impact they had on other characters, but simply the quality of their individual stories.
The purpose of this thread is to compare two characters objectively, from a narrative standpoint. It's not about who's your favorite.
On one hand, we have Jiraiya. He's the pervy sage, and his goofy and sporadic personality was certainly a breath of fresh air to the Naruto series. In terms of storyline, he was burdened with finding the savior of the Shinobi world. One student founded the akatsuki and came back to kill him later, the other was the son of his late student. His best friend became evil and abandoned the leaf village. Similar to Naruto and Sasuke. The true love of his life, Tsunade constantly rejected him. He lost his student, Minato, and his sensei Hiruzen. These aren't really impacts on other characters like I said we wouldn't do, but rather these are just inherently apart of his story line.
On the other hand, we have Kakashi. At times, Kakashi's personality seems a lot more complex than what Jiraiya has shown. Sometimes he can be competitive, sometimes aloof, sometimes outright sadistic, and sometime friendly and casual. Kakashi is a real savage when it comes to training students though. Kakashi was raised by a single father who eventually killed himself. He received a Sharingan when the closest person to being his best friend was smashed by a boulder, and then he stabbed his next best friend through the heart, and then his Sensei was impaled through the stomach by a massive fox tail.
Overall, they both have great personalities, and interesting stories. Kakashi's definitely seems a lot darker than Jiraiya's, despite Jiraiya's best friend becoming evil. I think they both participated in warring eras. I'm not really sure who I think is the better character based on all of this, but it's usually the one's who lose more and go through more that seem to resonate with me, so I might have to go with Kakashi. Jiraiya is a great character with a great personality and a lot of development, but Kakashi's story seems just a liiiitle more interesting, considering Jiraiya's is already extremely similar to Naruto's.
