Okay, so my last thread was a little too easy for you guys. We're doing the same thing here as in the last thread, comparing their personalities and their story-lines to figure out who's better as a character. We're not measuring their contribution to the main story-line or the impact they had on other characters, but simply the quality of their individual stories.

The purpose of this thread is to compare two characters objectively, from a narrative standpoint. It's not about who's your favorite.

On one hand, we have Jiraiya. He's the pervy sage, and his goofy and sporadic personality was certainly a breath of fresh air to the Naruto series. In terms of storyline, he was burdened with finding the savior of the Shinobi world. One student founded the akatsuki and came back to kill him later, the other was the son of his late student. His best friend became evil and abandoned the leaf village. Similar to Naruto and Sasuke. The true love of his life, Tsunade constantly rejected him. He lost his student, Minato, and his sensei Hiruzen. These aren't really impacts on other characters like I said we wouldn't do, but rather these are just inherently apart of his story line.

On the other hand, we have Kakashi. At times, Kakashi's personality seems a lot more complex than what Jiraiya has shown. Sometimes he can be competitive, sometimes aloof, sometimes outright sadistic, and sometime friendly and casual. Kakashi is a real savage when it comes to training students though. Kakashi was raised by a single father who eventually killed himself. He received a Sharingan when the closest person to being his best friend was smashed by a boulder, and then he stabbed his next best friend through the heart, and then his Sensei was impaled through the stomach by a massive fox tail.

Overall, they both have great personalities, and interesting stories. Kakashi's definitely seems a lot darker than Jiraiya's, despite Jiraiya's best friend becoming evil. I think they both participated in warring eras. I'm not really sure who I think is the better character based on all of this, but it's usually the one's who lose more and go through more that seem to resonate with me, so I might have to go with Kakashi. Jiraiya is a great character with a great personality and a lot of development, but Kakashi's story seems just a liiiitle more interesting, considering Jiraiya's is already extremely similar to Naruto's.

What do you guys think?

Jiraiya , he is more funny character , and someone who would be better friend to hang around.

Both have good stories ,but I don't like how Kakashi is somehow uninterested in his rivalry with Might Gai and their little competition, I like how he is calm , observant and intelligent, but he lacks real fighting spirit .

I really love both of these characters due to how complex they are. Kakashi is calm and collected despite enduring extreme pain and learning many obscene truths about the world. He was surrounded in war and bloodshed at the age of 6 (retcon later on) by partaking in the Chuunin Exams, was grown up by a single father who committed suicide, and was forced to kill one of his dearest friends. His relationship with Obito was also pretty grim and complex in and of itself. Obito embodied many of the beliefs that Kakashi's father which Kakashi rebuked for the utter humiliation it caused for the village. Because of that, Kakashi couldn't take Obito seriously and consistently humiliated and disrespected him. However, it was through Obito that Kakashi could understand what his father did. Kakashi had to live with the fact that Obito had sacrificed himself for Kakashi which not only evoked sorrow, but it also conveyed to Kakashi what his father had done and had ultimately changed his belief system. Obito helped him believe that people like Naruto could ultimately change things for the better and he had to live with the pain that he allowed Obito to die until he could finally reconcile with him many years later.

Jiraiya is the opposite. He's not a cool and collected character like Sasuke and Kakashi with many morbid truths surrounding them. He's not a talented shinobi like them and he is not a shinobi who has not once given up hope until his moment of death. He is the underdog who aspired to overcome insurmountable obstacles, who managed to become one of the most revered shinobi in the world, and the one who dedicated much of his life to mentor those like Nagato, Minato, and Naruto who hoped that one day they would be guiding force, the rays of sunlight that would lead people and ultimately change the world for the better. Even though Jiraiya deemed himself a failure for failing to rescue his friend (Orochimaru) and failing to aid Nagato for rising above the pain and hatred that engulfed the shinobi world, in his dying moments, he gave up his life to help Naruto and others create a world that everyone could live peacefully even if Jiraiya couldn't be a part of it.

It's very difficult for me to decide. Jiraiya's devotion towards helping others and his will to strive despite his shortcomings empowered many shinobi, but the mere thought of the pain and obscenities Kakashi endured as a kid coupled with the fact that he had to admit to killing Rin to Obito which instigated Obito's destruction makes them both incredible characters. If I had to pick, I'd pick Jiraiya because he was an underdog who understand the pain and hatred that engulfed the world and aspired to help others become the beacon of hope that everyone needed to finally bring peace to the world.

I have to give it to Kakashi.
What in the **** is that profile name and pic. Someone fetch me the holy water.

OT: I like them both in different ways. I respect Kakashi for his ideals, wiseness and strength, whilst I respect Jiraiya for his optimism and acting as a sort of beacon of hope (looking after the Nagato, Yahiko and Konan, mentoring Naruto, etc).
