Itachi saved at least one life who happened to be key to stopping Madara/Kaguya

Nagato killed Hanzo

Obito helped defeat Kaguya and helped unite the villages

Madara helped unite the villages and gave Nagato the Rinnegan he used to defeat Hanzo

Hashirama created the village system and likely prevented many child deaths

Nothing was in vain, even if it wasn't permanent
