He was busy with spying on Orochimaru i think. He was as crazy with Orochimaru as Naruto was with Sasuke so he just ept thinking "Orochimaru, my love, i will return you!". But when at the age of 50 lol, he realized that hmm yeah Orochimaru is a bad boy, he returned to KOnoha.

It is a shame Naruto grew up without a parent figure but Jiraiya had a mission to complete. Naruto is as strong as he is now because Jiraiya traveled and learned what he could and tried to pass what he knew to Naruto and all of Konoha, J-man was the one who discovered Akutski and let everyone else know what was going on, and when Jiraiya was there Naruto was safe.
I think Jiraiya was fine with the fact that Naruto was in the (indirect) hands of the 3rd Hokage and went off to investigate and protect Konoha abroad. He's a Sannin, there has to be huge responsibility to that job, that's like one down from Kage. Maybe it was impossible to do both. I don't see him as a bad Godfather at all.
Jiraiya isn't a bad godfather even sometime he bully naruto by taking naruto's frog wallet everytime when naruto having trouble, Jiraiya will help naruto... Naruto's Rasengan also teached by Jiraiya..

sannin are above kage level. orochimaru can SUMMON kage's, jiraiya's hermit mode would rape any kage, and tsunade......doesn't die lol. tsunade had arteries and muscles slashed all over her body and orochimaru cut her with his sword countless times and she healed right through it all. any other "human" in the show would be dead after an assualt like that. arteries being cut is instant death in the real world lol.

Actually there is no rank as above kage level cuz there is no "Kage level" since all kages have different strenght. 4th was a "kage". Kage is simply the strongest shinobi in the village.

Jiraya should have at LEAST been around to befriend Naruto when he had nobody else. There's no way he was on a 5-10 year mission either, he likely had plenty of chances to secretly stop by Konoha and cheer the kid up.

I don't think the debate is about what kind of godfather he was to Naruto after he returned to Konoha shortly before the Chuunin exam finals and afterwards.
The concern I believe arises from the fact that he wasn't around to raise him from an infant to 11-12 years old. I don't think that it has to do with Orochimaru because I think that happened well before Naruto was born. Albeit he was tracking his movements, which is how he learned about Akatsuki, since Orochimaru joined. I don't think it has to do with Akatsuki per se either. I think it ultimately has to do with him fulfilling his destiny as told by the great old toad that revealed his prophecy to Jiraiya. One of the components was that he would travel the world.

Given that it appears he was killing shinobi at the time (I think that he was because Nagato took bodies that Jiraiya defeated in battle). I don't know how safe it would've been for Naruto to be with him at his age.
However, if it was safe, Naruto would've become a much smarter ninja much sooner. It's a two sided sword as people have said. If Jiraiya doesn't wander the world would he construct a belief of what can bring peace in the ninja world? If he stays home and trained Naruto, he becomes a finer ninja sooner, but doesn't hold the essentials for bring peace quite possibly.
We take Sasuke's lineage:
Sasuke who is a genius was raised by the leader of the Uchiha and watched Itachi train. Yes his family was taken from him, but that was just after he attended the academy. Before then he was already taught fire ninjutsu. Sasuke was born a genius and born with the Sharingan, would be unlikely to be as powerful as he was so quickly without this parentage and a brother like Itachi.
Sasuke has a horrible ninja way that has left him "in the darkness" as Neji would say. Sasuke is consumed with revenge. He has a very narrow focus, and he is thus incapable at the moment of bringing peace to the ninja world; rather, he is in state that perpetuates the existence of it and hatred.
Naruto and Sasuke are always good foils to each other.
In the end, I love the idea of Jiraiya raising Naruto. However, it violates Jiraiya's prophecies, and it may have harmed Naruto's outlook.
I think the finer consideration is whether the Third Hokage was not proper to Naruto. He knew what the situation was, but it doesn't seem like he did much to help him. His grandson got Ebisu, a personal ninja trainer. Naruto got nothing, and his development was stunted. Naruto was a pariah who was feared and hated, and it took 11 years before his teacher would help him. Everyone else of Naruto's generation had parents to guide their early development. I feel the Third owed Naruto more than he gave him.

The man was Naruto's godfather, he should've been around and raised him when he was much younger.
You guys are acting like he was abroad for 10 years, but it seems like he was visiting Konoha once in a while. And he should've cheered him up then, and not start raising him once he became a ninja.
That's what I don't understand, but J-Man still owns though.
