izanagi-no-mikoto burst out of the entrance and quickly pushed a boulder in the mouth of the yomotsuhirasaka (黄泉津平坂; cavern that was the entrance of yomi). Izanami-no-mikoto screamed from behind this impenetrable barricade and told izanagi-no-mikoto that if he left her she would destroy 1,000 residents of the living every day. He furiously replied he would give life to 1,500.
Another version is izanagi was running with his wife out the entrance of yomi, instructed not to look at her until out, and a step before fully out he looked at izanami and she was decayed. Afraid, izanagi summoned a boulder in front of the entrance. enraged, izanami cursed that she would kill a 1,000 men every day, but izanagi retorted that he would give life to 1,500 men every day.
