Welcome. I'm now going to write down some speculations on what could have happened if Izuna possessed the Kotoamatsukami.
There was a constant strife between the Senju & the Uchiha. But they grew tired on fighting and decided to join forces all but the leader of the Uchiha, Madara.
(Speculation.)
I think Madara grew tired of it first, before everyone else and wanted to end the war waaay earlier than the rest but his brother disagreed. Izuna used his Kotoamatsukami on his brother so that he could never stop fighting the Senju. Izuna also ordered Madara to take his eyes so that the Uchiha would triumph. Madara had no choice to but to agree influenced by the Kotoamatsukami.(/)
When the Senju & the Uchiha joined forces Madara could simply not accept it. Being under the command of their sworn enemy that his brother had died to triumph over.
Kotoamatsukami does not wear off. Madara will fight the Senju til the day he dies.
He battled Hashirama but failed. He somehow survived (probaly thanks to Zetsu) and lived to hate the Senju and the betrayal of his comrades.
Decades passed, Madara now possessing his brother's eyes had Kotoamatsukami and it could be used once again. He took refugee in the the Hidden Mist Village secretly controlling it by taking control over the Mizukage Yagura with Izuna's non Kotoamatsukami eye. (Just like how Danzo did at the Kage meeting)
Madara prolonged his life thanks to Zetsu and was constantly looking for a fitting substitue.
He managed to find an Uchiha with the same eyes as himself. These eyes uses the Space–Time Migration. (Just like how Shisue had the same eyes as Izuna) This man would become his substitue. His replacement that would continue the fight against the Senju when Madara himself would slowly fade away due to his overwhelming age. This man was Obito.
Izuna's Kotoamatsukami was now used for the last time on Obito. From this point Zetsu follows and helps Obito. This is where Obito's journey as Tobi begins.
This is how Obito survived. Or he just got rebuilt by Zetsu.
Madara join forces with Itachi to slay the Uchiha clan for betraying him. He dies in the act and is never to be seen again.
Obito manages to take control over the nine tails at rougly the age of 14-16 and attacks Konoha but stopped by the Fourth hokage. (His former teacher).
Obito is the same age as Kakashi when this happends, this is a picture of a young Kakashi at the same time.
Sasuke & Orochimaru will now go and find out the truth behind the coup'd'état but will instead find out that Madara died in the Uchiha massacree.
This theory do have flaws like any other. The switch of masks would make sense but that would mean that Obito used Madara's mask against Minato and then made a new one.
