Can somebody explain to me exactly how this technique works? I've read the chapter over and over but I still don't understand!

Lol good luck, I wa getting i untill Itachi started talking about find ones true self. What I believe is

Izanami is a tech preventer, If the person keep doing "that" tech a loop will accure making the action genjutsu(not real). However Izanami requier the user to take the tech head on and possible die and that's why Itachi said it's for Izanagi and shouldn't be use on anything else but since he was edo he couldn't die. IDK to much to understan really he said it's escapable by accepting fate what ever that mean. I hope kishi show again so we can understand more cause atm it's an asspull jutsu.
