Way before the big reveal happened, how many of you thought Tobi was actually Obito? What were some theories around at the time?

For me, I had somewhat of an idea of who Tobi was. I had not read Kakashi's Gaiden nor seen its anime adaptation at the time, so I didn't know who Obito was, but I did make the connection with the similar powers as Kakashi and having the opposite Sharingan as Kakashi by the time Gokage summit arc had appeared. I did not actually have a solid idea that it was Obito was until Kabuto v. Sasuke and Itachi happened in the Manga and I went back through the series.

I thought he was Izuna. Obito was everyone's first thought so why would it be him Kishi is such a troll.

I guessed he was Obito. The fact that his name pretty much spelled it is why I just kept believing it.

for me i thought he was izuna.
when he fought konan a part of his mask broke and his face looked like it has wrinkles so i thought he would be really old so he is madara
but when madara was revived i thought he was izuna

Since the fight with Konan I thought it was Obito. Looking at the part where the mask was broken the facial structure was way too similar to kid Obito.

I think that pretty much everybody at the time had figured out that Tobi was Obito. There were several posts going back a ways arguing this point.

The biggest argument against Obito were that he was just a minor character with no development (which has since changed) and that making him a primary villain didn't make any sense, either. There were some other theories floating around, such as Shisui, some random other Uchiha, Izuna, or Tobirama, with the latter two being fairly prevalent. However, since those theories really didn't make sense, most people gravitated to Obito fairly quickly.

Thought that for a long time, mainly because it only ever showed him with one sharingan and since he gave one of his eyes to Kakashi...yeahhh kinda obvious.

I always thought it was Obito because I had some dumb logic about tobi and obito and some rearranging crap but hey we were right even if our logic was flawed lol

Somehow it took SO long for the revail that I started to doubt about it and guessed it could be even Danzo, lol

Well i guarantee you everyone noticed the connections between tobi, and obito right away, people just didnt think kishi would do something so obvious.

So the 2 groups that formed after that were the ones who stuck with the obvious choice, and those who made theories about every other uchiha in the manga that he could be. That masked man shit was my favorite point of naruto, there was so much mystery and i wanted to know so bad lol. Good times
