Uzumaki have strong spiritual life force.
The sage took in the juubi and the two combined make the uchiha and senju.
The senju getting the uzumaki traits life forces (Yang) and the uchiha getting the spiritual force (Yin) stored in the eyes gaining attributes from the juubi which is why the uchiha can control tailed beast.

Let me try to explain the most likely scenario. The sage is a master fuinjutsu specialist from the Uzumaki clan. The Senju and Uchiha powers obviously derive from the Juubi. When the sage sealed the Juubi inside himself, he gained the rinnegan and Senju abilities. Kind of like how Naruto and Bee get abilities from their bijuu (Healing, ink) Then, obviously this part is a little foggy seeing as we dont know the origin of his sons, he splits the powers he got from the Juubi into his new sons using Creation of all Things. It could split and give personality to bijuu, why couldnt it split the sage's power?

Rikudo was influenced by the Juubi.
You can say Senju+Uchiha= Uzumaki+Juubi. The sage gained his ocular power from the Juubi and he passed it on to his eldest son(Uchiha).

The Senju gained the body of the sage, which is identical to the Uzumaki's...
