Village and peace is irrelevant since we're talking about the relationship of the two brothers,especially since it's quite obvious that village and peace > family for Itachi. If Itachi said something like that to make him feel better, then that's dumb, he just told Sasuke another lie, and lying to Sasuke hasn't done him well so far. He meant what he said, and Sasuke told Itachi he would definitely destroy Konoha before Itachi passed. I guess looking at things from a biased perspective makes a person ignorant.
And that's why all of Indra's incarnations have died. Peace can't be brought by force, rather through love and peaceful methods. Trying to attain peace through bloodshed is foolish.
