It was plot restrictions. Think back to the training trip, he learned shit all, now imagine if he had even just 3-4 Kage Bunshin train with him in whatever. See, it would've made a big difference. No one even told him about the memory feedback until part 2. That's ridiculous. Yes, he should have noticed but christ you think they'd tell the kid.
