Dafuq. Firstly if you take a ninja's abilities that distinguishes them from the rest they wouldnt be as strong without it and thats common sense. But you see, if a ninja gains an ability they mold their fighting style around that ability.

Saying all that itachi has shown me enough to conclude that he would still be a top class shinobi without the sharingan no different to sasuke who before he activated the sharingan was hailed a genius and he graduated top of the class before he gained the sharingan

No he still has his fire style jutsu and has the potential to unlock another eliment,he is an agile and strong fighter(he sent kureni flying with just one side kick), he can go toe to toe with any elite tai jutsu user,he is a good stretegist can asset situation carefully and form counter stretegy almost as fast as shikamaru, so even if you take that sharingan out he would still be an elite jonin lvl ninja.
