All of the stuff in late shippuden about the Coup d'État, and the uchiha clan seems kind of just conveniently thrown in there in part 1 there was absolutely (correct me if i'm wrong) no sign of itachi's true goals, even in his battles in part 1 everyone that he battled he was trying to kill. Even in shippuden when he fought sasuke, the battle was "supposed" to be setup and sasuke was supposed to inevitably win, but Itachi was going for headshots, (amaterasu, tsukyomi, etc.). To me it seems like up until late shippuden Kishimoto the decides to add more backstory behind Itachi.

Well most of part 1 itachi used genjutsu to stop them but not kill. I think itachi telling sasuke to hate is the biggest evidence to his backstory being last minute. But I remember sasuke saying during the bell test that he remembered itachi crying for a moment

There were hints everywhere, it was nuts. Which is why 70% (on major forums when polls were done) of people knew there was more and many actually managed to speculate the exact truth before the reveal in '08.

Read this thread since you're mentioning part one:

in their battle itachi used his MS abilities to push sasuke into a corner and take oro out of hius body. and in part 1,he did that so sasuke would get more motivation and train more to defeat itachi. I thought it is obvious ;l

Actually Itachi is one of the most planned characters in the manga. His every dialogue and action is there for a reason - he comes in the story to play a role and leaves when he is done.

If you are referring to current insertion of Itachi Shinden in Naruto Shippuden Anime - I haven't watched any of it so I don't know about it. It would have been nicer if they made it as a separate series as they had announced earlier instead of inserting it in the ongoing series in middle of another story. I guess they don't want sell Itachi Shinden DVDs separately or soemthign( just wild guess about this part).

That means we may get Kaguya's story in the shippuden itself too...
