In this thread..I will try to discuss Uchiha Itachi's true motives..anyone can help 
First..The 3 things that is very important to Itachi.
1.) Sasuke
yes..it's true..what tobi is saying is true..Itachi really loved his brother..itachi had a sickness and is fighting for his life just for the sake of his love for sasuke..He traded honor for disgrace and Sasuke's love for his hatred..Itachi just really need to put sasuke into his limits so he could be freed by the cursed seal and to attain the power that can surpass madara..He entrusted the Uchiha name to Sasuke so that it would be proud again..as you can see now thats what's happening..Uchiha Sasuke wants the uchiha clan to be reborn again..Itachi wanted to die in the hands of his own brother so that people can say that Sasuke is the one that gained revenge for the killer of uchias..all of it was planned by Itachi..Itachi implanted the idea in Sasuke that the Uchiha clan was a noble member of Konohagakure and that he had killed them for petty reasons. Itachi begged the Third Hokage not to tell Sasuke the truth, and also threatened Danzo to prevent him from harming Sasuke. After his last mission for the village was completed, Itachi spent the next several years planning his own death at Sasuke's hands..
2.) Konohagakure
Yes..he loves this country..thats why he killed and murdered his own family..
Because the uchiha family planned a coup de tat to take over konoha..He had killed his clan only because he had been ordered to by Konoha to stop the Uchiha from rebelling against the village or else Konoha would order other anbu to kill the clan instead..For the sake of Konoha and for Sasuke he was willing to die as a criminal and a traitor.
3.) Naruto
Why? Seriously..Itachi never wanted to kill or kidnap naruto at the first place..in chapter 403 it is revealed that Itachi questioned Naruto on his dedication to both Konoha and Sasuke and, when Naruto gave him the answer he wanted to hear, apparently gave him a portion of his power, commenting that he hoped that Naruto would never have to use them..Yes Itachi knew that Naruto wont bend over by his words..Its like Naruto showing his love for sasuke and konoha..which made Itachi happy..but still Itachi did not trust what Sasuke would do so gave some of his power to Naruto as a failsafe (what power is currently unknown) in case Sasuke attacked the Hidden Leaf. Thats why he is important.
just to share this..maybe Uchiha Madara / Tobi also feared itachi when he was alive..thats why he is disguising his self as tobi..and wont go over konoha when itachi was alive.
the saddest quote for me that itachi said was
"As a hurdle you must overcome, I'll always be there for you. Even if you hate me...that's what being a big brother is."
