I'd say he did what he had to in order to preserve the village from a civil war which could have expanded into a great war. If you're wondering why he didn't spare the children, it was because do you really think those kids would have simply accepted the reality of that massacre. They'd have become little Sauskes, hell bent on revenge.

Wow you make good points! I've always thought yeah he cared about the village but he cared a out saskue way more.
Everything he did for the village ultimately was to save or help saskue. He knew if he didn't kill his own people Danzo would've and that would've included saskue so he did it to save saskue.
If itachi's main goal was to keep the village safe why wouldn't he have stoped Obito or nagato or Orochimoru?
I like itachi and I think he did stuff to save the village but that wasn't his main goal cuz if it was he diffently could've done more.

danzo and hiruzen would have destroyed uchihas if itachi did not. what civil war? if uchihas couldnt take over then theyd be killed. they knew this and depeneded on secrecy. all the elders even knew was uchihas were calling it revolution. koharu SPECULATED their intent is to have political power. surely they had a good reason to want to remove the dlers from power. and no other foriegn kage is a warmonger hell bent on destroying konoha. they had just gotten done with a war. if they thought konoha would destroy itself theyd either pick a side or stay away. i mean an entire hidden nation disappearing would destablise the world as kyuubi would become uncontrolled. itachi made sure this would happen by doing nothing about akatsuki til it was too late. not to mention letting oro go who proceeded to try to kill naruto which is what itachi should have been doing if it meant no kyuubi for akatsukis use. if itachi wants to use this "ends justify the means" crap on his clan why didnt he use it on anything else?

again, what civil war? and the other villages dont need internal strife in konoha to want to invade it. removing the most powerful arm of konohas military trhough genocide is as damaging to konohas power as a bloody battle would have been.
the sand invaded because of economic problems, pain and konan invaded to get kyuubi. kumo attacked konoha to get their hands on kyuubi.

itachi all but admitted sasuke only turned out the way he did because of itachi and tobis machinations and mindfuking sasuke into becoming obsessed with revenge. itachi practically told him "yes good, darth uchiha, let the hate flow through you then strike me down with your hatred!" itachi = emperor palpatine of narutoverse. he alone corrupted sasuke.
