What was Itachi's disease specifically? Was it the same as Kimimaro's? I have heard theories that it was actually Oro's poison, but I don't think so.

What do you think was the purpose of this? Was it to give a weakness to an otherwise indestructible Itachi? Or do you think it still has a part to play? Maybe Sasuke learns that someone gave Itachi the disease/poisons him and targets them?

Thoughts?

Well, he was coughing up blood, had some kind of thing with his left arm, and chest pain. He must've had some respiratory disease or lung cancer.

Killed off by the Akatsuki because he did not belong so Orochimaru posion or zetsu spores in the lungs, some bad sushi served up by Kisame. It all fed into Itachi's plan to die anyway though so he was fine with it. In fact, I think during that last moment where Itachi puts his hand over his mouth as he's slowly marching towards Sasuke is when Itachi takes some sort of poison pill himself. Then that last sealing jutsu he performed on Sasuke killed him

It's the same disease Madara had until he got his brothers eyes which caused him to get Ems. Overuse of a sharingan causes the user to be in great pain and also causes the user to be blind.
