I think there's been some inconsistencies with itachi's use of amaterasu
in part I , itachi could release amaterasu without hand seals
in part II when he was fighting sasuke, he somehow needed to weave hand seals before using amaterasu.
but in his edo state he could use it without hand seals again..!?

I think there are several possibilities:

1. those hand seals were meant for sth else

2. when he was fighting sasuke his physical condition was so bad that he couldnt manipulate his chakra as properly as in other circumstances , so he needed aid from hand seals to prepare for amaterasu

3. it's purely plot : the making of hand seals were meant as an opening for sasuke to throw shurikens to itachi to interrupt him and injure him , or to show how using MS took its toll on itachi....

wt do u guys think?

yeah i think #3 to. I dont think that its really necessary to weave hand signs for amaterasu.

It was never necessary to weave handseals for Amaterasu. Are you sure the handseals were not just for the regular katon jutsu he was using at the time against Sasuke prior to initiating amaterasu? I'll go w/ 1 on this for sure.

Itachi seems to weave hand seals to build up chakra for Amaterasu while using Katon against Sasuke if that's what you mean. Given his condition at that time, that seemed to be the case.

I take it back, he may have actually use it for the Fireball Jutsu.

I think Kishi just did that to make Itachi look cool, tbh.

Chidori, for example, sometimes they perform handseal and most of the time they don't.

I don't think those hand seals were for the fireball jutsu.....but it's still possible that he wanted to use some other jutsu as a distraction before initiating amaterasu

Or maybe as Solo pointed out, it may be just for aesthetic purposes. Simply put, Kishi just tries to make it look badass.
