Couldn't Itachi have assumed Sasuke had Oro's powers based on how he saw Sasuke use snakes/the CM during the battle and Itachi's plan was to push Sasuke to the limit to bring out Orochimaru, which he predicted would happen.

Calling Itachi a good guy is absurd to begin with. Bar his highly twisted (albeit pure and unconditional) love for Sasuke, people seem to forget that he slaughtered children and elderly indiscriminately simply because he was a hardliner and a jinjoist. There is no getting around this simple fact. That is why Sasuke was called his sole "weakness and mistake" in the manga.

Itachi knew of orochimaru's curse mark influence, he had no idea he absorbed orochimaru until sasuke pressed for chakra he didn't have and oro appeared.

It's funny how when Itachi died, he was my favorite and Sasuke was at the bottom of my list but when everything was revealed and then Itachi came back and admitted his huge failures, that seriously dented his character...

After that, Sasuke rose very high in my list for wanting to do what Itachi failed to do, though he still misunderstood the whole thing until Naruto punched some sense into him.

Sasuke > Itachi in terms of characterization/development

People try to make it seem as if Itachi is a high tier character of utmost importance in terms of writing. I think he's better than most, but not that great.

Itachi was a horrible brother, his reveal as a "good guy" made his character worse. Not only did itachi physically and mentally scar sasuke, he lowkey tried to seriously harm him.

Itachi used amaterasu on sasuke knowing it'd burn the crap out of him, he probably had intentions on putting it out after it literally roasted sasuke abit.

However Itachi had no knowledge of sasuke possessing orochimaru's oral rebirth technique and was even shocked he used it. Oro's technique is legit the only counter sasuke possessed for amaterasu at the time, it was plot that saved him.

If sasuke didn't have oro, he'd have serious 3rd degree burns and nasty scar tissue for life, assuming itachi actually quelled his flames. ​

Itachi's eyes were what ultimately aided in Naruto's prestigious title as the War Hero. Had Sasuke not have Itachi's eyes, Obito would've enveloped everyone in Mugen Tsukyomi. You should thank Itachi for his generosity. :bdpf:

I just don't like Itachi's character development. I'm not saying he's terrible but his character is very questionable at times.

I feel like because Itachi is so important to the story, is connected to major events, and has such interesting abilities, that people sometimes over exaggerate his character arcs. He's not that great tbh.

I've enjoyed characters like Sasori, Kisame, and Jiraiya (in example) far more than I did Itachi from start to finish.

he's unique, he's not just connected to major events. he's one of the main driving forces behind it tbh. his development is suppose to be told from different character's perspectives to have us readers try to decode what kind of man he really is and I think that is what kishi was trying to accomplish. it's not fleshed out as good as it should be but honestly it could be said for any character here. so honestly I can see why you think his development is lackluster but from my point of view I think his role was to develop other characters by having itachi be this stepping stone that one must surpass (yes even naruto at one point). as for characterization, I like the "real" itachi. his selfless respectable personality help me justify why sasuke went so far to avenge this guy. but anyway, itachi's develop is sasuke (it's hard to explain) and I appreciate that.... so yes. he would be lackluster but honestly there was a point to it. something I can't say the same for madara, those akatsuki's you liked etc.

ability wise. - not exaggerated. it was power-creep. the hype was definitely legit back then before the whole DBZ'ish village busting and bijuu bomb etc. which is kinda ironic since nagato is more or less in the same boat as itachi now. his "god's eyes" back then is basically a "trial version" of madara's :lol

Yea but let's be realistic, if itachi wanted sasuke dead he would of been dead a long time ago, same with the rest of the jonin he encountered when he came back to konoha

if we're going to talk about what's realistic, Itachi would've died trying to take Gai out.
