Naruto agreed not to tell anyone because then the Uchiha would be forever disgraced. They would be known as the butthurt clan that wanted to kill their Hokage and completely take over their village just due to reasons pertaining to their pride. No one is ever finding out. This way, the Uchiha clan remains to be looked at as noble and Itachi as a psychopath teen who killed them for fun. Itachi doesn't care for his own reputation, but his clan's.
