Ok guys. 1st things 1st. I'm not here to say Itachi was a great person. Nor am I to say he was a bad person. Please understand that as you read below.
Most people that contest Itachi's hero-ism say that he killed his entire clan. And others justify that it would've happened anyway, and he just saved the leaf.
Now this is what I mean look at the bigger picture: step outside the Narutverse. It seems apparent that ORIGINALLY, Kishimoto wanted Itachi to be a villain. That is why he had him kill his clan, inspire Sasuke to darkness, and be a powerful antagonist.
But as time went on, specifically as we got to Shippuden, Kishimoto CHANGED his mind, and wanted to make Itachi a protagonist- just one that was in a difficult predicament. That's why we get all these explanations, back-stories, blackmailing, coup de' ats, reasons, righteous actions, etc.
All I'm saying is that Kishimoto is human, and is writing a manga, which is released on a chapter-by-chapter basis, not all at once. So, when he decided that Itachi shouldn't be a villain, he gave other perspectives that otherwise wouldn't have been there.
