Itachi did exactly what he was told by his superiors with perfect execution and then accepted to take the blame and play the bad guy for the sake of the village. Nothing more nothing less. The only bad thing he did was failing to make Sasuke walk on a right path, transforming him in a criminal instead.

He did another few questionable things in part 1 but that's Kishi's fault for making him a villain then half-ass retconing him into a good guy later.

itachi is a true saint, he did a difficult and noble thing that a hypocritical coward like naruto would never be able to do.

What are you on mate. They did nothing yet and Itachi could have EASILY talked them out of it but didn't. He is not a saint but a mass murderer and that's also how most of the people in Naruto think. Also, why did he even join Akatsuki again? I forgot.

The given reason was that he was keeping a watch on them from the inside, the theory is he was Jirayas spy and he kept Tobi from attacking konohagakure.
