Itachi takes it with many difficulties.

Jiraiya is one of those characters whom you can't really measure his power level. His pro's and cons n comparison with other characters is hard to measure. And we barely saw any serious fights from Jiraiya other than fighting Pain. The anime is too crappy to get a good image of the differences in rank.

Kakashi had knowlegde, and clones. As far as I remember, he spent the next two weeks in the hospital.

Takes ages.

-gets drowned in yomi numa

False. Itachi can just disable Susanoo, get out of the swamp by channeling chakra into his feet, and re-activate susanoo. Yomi Numa is more effective against Big summons.

-gets sealed with B rank sealing jutsu

It takes time to prepare the sealing scroll unless he can make it while his flesh is burning (Don't think so)

-sage mode

Not enough time, MS can be activated while Jiraiya is still thinking about activating the SM.

-jiraiya tricked all three paths

Itachi tricked the ninja world.

Itachi beats any Sannin comfortably, Orochimaru served as an example already. People try to find Jiraiya's counters for Itachi's techniques but forget that Itachi is the one who is smarter, more skilled and more talented.

We haven't seen Jiraya's full potential.I like him as character but he can't beat Itachi same it would take a a lot to defeat.For me they are almost equal,tho if i have to choose i'd pick Itachi because of MS.

Intelligence/Knowledge
Jiraya > Itachi

Although Itachi was called a genius,J-man is more experienced and knowledgeable in battle aspects.

Strengh
Itachi = Jiraya

Having MS abilities doesn't make the battle obvious,Jiraya wasn't called The Legendary Sannin for nothing

Still my point : It's hard to compare those characters having so little information about their true abilities.

Itachi wins this high difficulty

Even though Itachi has genjutsu on his side , Jiraiya has varitey of techniques. Heck he can even use a jutsu , his hair as the weapon. Plus, don't underestimate sage mode of his.

He would have quick speed and i;m pretty sure Jiraiya can use katon which can stop Itachi's katon. Nevertheless, Jiraiya would lose after a prolonged fight. He just can't cope with taking on someone with visual prowess in my opinion even though he is considered a legendary sannin =D

I debated on this topic a while ago and proved why Jiraya takes this, my post was exclusive, it explained a method by which Jiraya could enter in SM w/out worrying about Itachi's onslaught an I posted counters to all of Itachi's Jutsus as well U_U Unfortunately I can't find that post but its sill there in one of the big Itachi vs Jiraya thread U_U

Regarding Chapter 144, I've spoken to some people who know how to read japanese (and those who are obviously able to read the raw japanese scans of the naruto manga) and they have said that itachi and kisame were talking about jiraiya, not kurama.

jiraya wins...! itachi admitted it..! pain confirmed it...! manga proves it...! now genjutsu i'd say jiraya can deal with it on his own but just to be on the safe side ma & pa counter it or clones can do the trick...! amaterasu, hebi sasuke evaded itachi's amaterasu by running around and it has only killed zetsu so saying amaterasu kills jiraya is utter foolishness...! susano is a problem but for how long can he maintain it...! again jiraya has advantage in stamina...! lastly why are we only considering itachi's feats...! if jiraya gets to make the first move sound genjutsu ends itachi in one move...! but anyway i don't believe in one shot fights so it would be mid to high diff battle for jiraya...!
