As much as that might be true, it's pure speculation at this point. Itachi still used Tsukuyomi on Kakashi and Sasuke and still captured tailed beasts knowing they'd be killed. He had every reason to take on Jiraiya according to Akatsuki. He could've very well just ran away cause he didn't want to face him due to inferiority.Well they never really had an actual fight. Itachi was avoiding fighting him. He told Kisame it was because they would stalemate him at best even with the two of them but realistically he was probably just avoiding fighting jiraiya as he was a valuable asset to the leaf and he didn't want to start a deathmatch with him, possibly killing him.
All that really happened was Jiraiya used his toad stomach jutsu and trapped Itachi and Kisame in the toads tummy. They were able to escape because Itachi had used amaterasu to break through it. Jiraiya then sealed the flames that were burning in the toads stomach. That about sums it up, not much of a fight.
After seeing the full scale of Itachi's abilities I'd find it doubtful he'd run away from Jiraiya because he believes himself to be inferior, especially with Kisame backing him up. The real question is whether Kishimoto had Itachi's entire story fleshed out when he wrote the part we're talking about. I'm assuming that he did which is why it is a realistic theory saying that he was just avoiding an unnecessary battle with Jiraiya, whom he held no ill will for and probably respected greatly. As much as that might be true, it's pure speculation at this point.
