Before Edo Itachi went off to face Kabuto he told Naruto that he trusted him to take care of Sasuke

Itachi acted like the evil older brother to deceive Sasuke, as a part of this persona he always told Sasuke to kill his best friend and come before him with the mangekyou.

One may argue that Itachi would not have known that Naruto was Sasuke's best freind, or would become Sasuke's best friend. However, Itachi finds out Naruto's determination to protect Sasuke before his final battle with Sasuke:

Even after this he criticizes Sasuke for not having the mangekyou:

I know that Itachi was again putting on an act here, but how did he know that Sasuke wasn't going to to kill Naruto? Sasuke even had a chance to kill naruto at the valley of the end, so didn't Itachi take a massive risk every time he told sasuke to kill naruto.

Nah, I think he knows his little brother enough to know he wouldn't do it. Even though I don't like the bastard, Itachi is extremely intelligent.

Itachi knew Sasuke wouldn't go so far as to kill his best friend.

it was Orochimaru's *death* that was in place of *killing his best friend* by Itachi sealing *killing* Oro with Totsuka.

Sasuke absorbed Oro and Itachi *killed* him. Oro does bad things , but his subordinates look at him like a best friend almost and/or a father figure. You don't have to KILL your friend, you just have to witness their deaths.

Karin , Suigetsu, Jugo, sound 5 all adore Orochimaru , even Anko still had feelings for him.

according to Tobi it was Orochimaru's death (or maybe Itachi's) that caused Sasuke the necessary requirements of MS.

I have to admit that walking into this I was sciptical, but this is actually a pretty good observation... My reply to this would be that he was playing the role of the Evil Brother, I mean the only reason Sasuke needed to MS was to defeat Itachi, whom he was fighting at the moment, and so Sasuke would have had no reason to attack Naruto after defeating Itachi. Furthermore as a last precation Itachi did place his bird into Naruto, and since Naruto would do anything to stop Sasuke from falling further into darkness and plans on saving him if Sasuke did happen to attack the village, and by association Naruto, then the bird would come out and use the EMS to stop Sasuke.

So you can say that Itachi further telling Sasuke to go after MS would have only had been relevant if Sasuke still wanted to attack the village after defeating Naruto, if that was the case he would need the power of MS, and when he did he would be caught in Shishui's genjutsu which was placed within the bird that was in Naruto.

What seems like a bad decision is really Itachi covering all bases and preparing for every contingency. This is what made him such an incredible Ninja.

you misunderstand him. He really meant for sasuke to kill naruto and gain the mangekyou. His fight with sasuke was simply for sasuke to gain ems, which is why itachi said when you have the same eyes as me then stand before me. Naruto was initially a sacrifice necesary for sasuke's growth, but orochimaru offered an alternative path to power, that didnt require the killing of naruto.

yeah, that second was one massive risk to the point at times I'm not sure if Kishimoto planned it all out from the beginning. He probably did but the fact that that doubt's there means it's huge inconsistency or at the very least risk that Itach took.

Itachi told Sasuke to kill his best friend in order to get MS, so he could fight Itachi. this friend would have been a Leaf nin. Killing a Leaf-nin would have made Sasuke a missing-nin, but Itachi wanted Sasuke to remain loyal to the Leaf.it makes no sense. Literally everything would have been ruined had Sasuke decided to kill Naruto at the Valley of the End.

the problem is still there. Itachi could not have foreseen the curse mark. He told Sasuke to kill a Leaf-nin back when Sasuke was seven. this would have resulted in Sasuke becoming a missing-nin.
