It was either have his whole clan killed, or have Sasuke and himself spared. His clan would've died either way, he just chose to save Sasuke. As you saw, he cried as well, he wasn't heartless about it.

you obviously don't think of others...
there is probably hundreds and thousand more other people in the village than the uchiha. at the time itachi fought and protected the village and still did untill he died. its more wise to save the hundreds of thousands more than to selfishly join the uchiha (possibly starting a war in the village leaving it vunerable to attack by other hidden villages) and possibly those hundreds and thousands die in the process, leaving the mighty konoha in ruins.
To me the uchiha clan are a cursed, selfish, power hungry clan.

OT: We're all entitled to our opinions but try to understand Itachi's point of view. He hates war and violence so he took out his clan to save the lives of many more.

To side the the Uchiha: Him and his entire clan be slaughtered including Sasuke, even though he is a genius, his no match for the ENTIRE Leaf village. The Uchiha would be shamed in history and speaken of as brutes and savages.

To side with the village: Him and Sasuke would live on, and the Uchiha would look like the victims of an unforunate massacre. Their legacy would live on through Sasuke, ( Who instead decided to be a faqq ) and Itachi himself would sell out his life in the Akatsuki, still protecting Sasuke in many ways.

this thread is such a fail and full of hatred toward itachi..
the OP does not even get what was at risk, all he can see is that itachi sided with konoha instead of his family. but i dont blame you, as you might be 10 so you are kind of justified for your farytail'way of thinking.

The guy prevented a world war.
The humiliation of his clan's name and family because of konoha's power hungry elders.
The annihilation of an entire race without anyone to carry the honorable name.
The saved the life of thousends and millions.

Naruto would have probably been captured and use as a weapon. (lol)
Kakashi killed also the konoha 11 even if at the end the uchiha all dies.
even if the uchihas win or lose, others countries would have invade.
konoha's people would have got turtured their people and killed, rape the women and slave the childrens.

and the list goes up.

Turned his life into the worst possible, being hated by the one he loved, bieng hated by the village he is so devoted to protect and life in dishonor all his life.
protecting everyone in the shadows. thats a hero. itachi deserved a monument with his name or beside the hokages' faces.

All I can say is that your a hater, and you don't understand, in that same chapter he was crying, and his father told him not to hesitate, because he should follow his own path... Of course it's bad that he killed his whole family... But it was either them or the village and sasuke.
