The cycle of hatred within the Uchiha had been going on for generations, it would not stop (and actually become MUCH worse) if you only killed the parents/ninjas.

This is evident in the reaction of Sasuke.

I'm not saying I agree with this idea, but in the manga world its a logical conclusion even if not a "moral" one.

1. itachi killed his clan including small kids (i wonder how they were the threat)

2. left a snake behind (sasuke ofc)

2. Well he couldnt kill his brother, can you blame him for that? Maybe he wanted that just one of the Uchihas would live on.

3. That was necessary, he wanted to get killed by him, give him the MS and make him a hero in the eyes of the villagers. He probably did not even want to live for very long after he had to do such an massacre.

4. Cant blame Sasuke for hating the village after they killed his whole clan, parents and practically his brother. It may be wrong to want to kill the whole village but you really cant blame him, he growed up with the wrong people (Orochimaru) and with just one wish, revenge. People tend to think and act a bit off after someone kills a beloved person..yet alone the whole family.

As I said before on the other Itachi Intelligence threads, I believe Itachi is intelligent but in the area of Narutoverse knowledge. Just like how Tobi is clever, he is intelligent in the history and knowledge of the Naruto world.
Then there are Shikaku, Shikamaru and Minato who are smart is strategy tactics and analysis.
IMO, Itachi is brainy but in a different catagory of intelligence as other Shinobi.

So on top of his general knowledge, he is also very skilled in combat due to 1) having mastered many jutsu and techniques and 2) having demostrated strategy and tactics on par with Minato.

See the Nagato fight, for instance.

Sasuke would then be hailed as a hero by the Leaf and would start a "new era" of the Uchiha clan without the hatred towards Senju.

Itachi's plan failed due to Tobi revealing it to Sasuke. Had this not occured, Sasuke might have indeed returned to Konoha.

So it all makes perfect logical sense -> Itachi carries out his orders 99.9% to completion, but comes up with this idea (above) in order to allow the Uchiha clan to survive BUT with a new "worldview", so to speak. It just didn't work out.
