And...i've read a lot of books. Hear me out.
I want to make clear: I have grown to like the Itachi character when he's handled sensibly. Good characters have strength and vulnerability to be relatable and accessible. His personality is great, his portrayal- less so. His 2 novels are some of the most flawed, wanking and unengaging books i've ever read. I liked all of the Hiden novels to this point but barely got through them. (They were a Christmas present & as a completionist, i'll give any book a chance.)
At least you learn a lot about the specifics of Konoha politics of the time era around the Uchiha genocide and Minato's rise to Hokage. And everything to do with every other character BUT Itachi is great. Shisui should've been the protagonist of this novel, Fugaku even. The attempt at a love interest is pathetic, Danzo repeats the same Root formula that Naruto fans have seen 3+ times now and the academy stuff is the same thing every single time. You wouldn't watch a given episode of Konohamaru's academy days against 'the bully' but with Itachi it's meant to be different? Itachi is a static and emotionless Gary Stu and hence, a boring protagonist to follow.
You NEVER do self-inserts or power fantasies in literature, it's one of the first rules of fiction. Itachi appeals to outcast snobs who consider themselves geniuses. There is ZERO interesting about a character who became prefect before his first year and had zero challenge against even the other kids and even the teachers. By the time the playground battle came, I was hoping those bullies would beat up our main protagonist tbh. Total failure for engagement. It's a shame but certain chapters made me feel more dirty than Sakura Hiden did.
I felt like I was reading the fanfic power fantasy of a 14 year old outsider the day before he decided to shoot up his school.
