Lol don't you realize that anything itachi did or said back then with leaf shinobi like gai or jiaiya probably wasn't for the reason we thought. He probably just didn't want to kill gai or jiraiya. You guys seemed to forget that itachi always loved the leaf village and wouldn't hurt one of its shinobi's like that.

There's nothing to misunderstand. He looks at Itachi's finger, he gets caught. Having no genjutsu feats whatsoever, he fails to break it, hell he probably isn't even aware he's already trapped. Gai dies.
