This is more argueable wen looking at the anime based on the recent feats of itachi. Mainly his ability to defeat pain with little assistance. But in the manga he is also recieving alot of hype. I think its kishis attemp to make it clear that itachi is still greater than sasuke. And arguably as strong as nagato. The only way pain could win is if he used planetary devastation and itachi couldnt destroy it

Nagato is an edo. He is not fighting at 100%

He also has movement problems and Itachi is OP since he can spam MS techniques without going blind or suffering backlashes.

Really, Nagato beats Itachi ...

I don't think there's any real contest.

Itachi = Nagato imo, with Itachi having an edge due to super-intelligence.

Nagato def has more raw power though.

Nagato>Itachi stands. First and foremost, there's nothing to say Itachi can challenge the full Six Paths of Pain, therefore he can't beat the stronger Nagato. In addition he did need to have Nagato robbed of his mind and mobility to stand a chance, yet he still needed Nagato's attention diverted away from him to stand a chance.

There are too many arguments that can be used to make a very powerful Nagato>Itachi argument. The same can't really be said for Itachi>Nagato as, well if you look at the evidence objectively, you'll see there is nothing pointing towards the latter stance.

Nagato is clearly stronger than Itachi.

No itachi can't win against nagato the gap in power between him and nagato is just to far especially when itachi knows the has to face all that by himself, itachi cannot win this fight.

i also think there is a tie i love both of them, it would be interesting seeing naruto's practically older brother against sasuke's older brother :DD

Itachi can't use KA since it's not his.

He calls it his power/genjutsu on several occasions.

Anyway, people whining about Nagato being controlled aren't taking into consideration:

  • Kabuto's tactics are better than aything Nagato has ever done (with or without Pain.)
  • Being a blank slate protected him from genjutsu
  • When Itachi's best jutsu came out, Nagato's reactions stood no chance.
Basically, the anime eliminated some damage-control reasoning. But not all of it.

In all honesty, it's not much of a match. Nagato needs multiple handicaps in order to create a more level playing field.

That was not Nagato. It was Nagato controlled by Kabuto.

Big difference.

The anime makes it clear that Nagato had PLENTY of PNJ help.

He regenerated from Amaterasu while nobody sealed him.

He regenerated from having his arms cut off while nobody sealed him.

Both Amaterasu the Totsuka were clearly too fast for his reactions (not even needing clone trickery.)

Basically, there was a lot of standing around chatting to his benefit.

And most of his attacks were also ambushes (the initial Shinra Tensei, attacking Bee, grabbing Naruto, etc.)

In the end, Kabuto (and the author) have more respect for Itachi, because Itachi's the better ninja.
