Kabuto confirmed that the reason nagato lost is because he wasn't mobile since he died as a cripple.
He could have dodge the attack and used shinra tensei to blow aways susano therefore disabling the totsuka blade.
Itachi can't destroy planetary devastation on his own. Itachi, Naruto and Bee's combined attacked saved them.
