Most people are under the impression that Itachi wiped out his clan for the sake of defending the village and protecting Sasuke

However there was a 3rd reason that was mentioned but people tend to ignore it

That third reason was to protect the Uchiha's Name.

Itachi knew the UChiha was well respected and feared in Konoha as well as around the world. He did not want to see the clan being labeled a traitor that was wiped out within it's own nation FOREVER disgracing it's name. So to not allow this. He decided to take that burden himself forever keeping the Uchiha clan as a well respected clan.

A Perfect Example of this was when Naruto was talking to Itachi... Itachi was listening to him UNTIL Naruto brought up the part about Uchiha being traitors

My question however is... What would have happended had the truth got out?

There is a falacy in that thought and is the reason why the Uchiha were planning a coup. The Uchiha were a part of the village, yes? They are Konoha. How can the Uchiha betray Konoha, since they are also Konoha. The system of duality setup by Tobirama ensured that they would never fully be equal or integrated. This is a noble struggle.

Incidentally, this is happening to an extent in Hong Kong currently. The people of Hong Kong are justified because, afterall, they are China also.
