Not wanting to fight Jiraiya because of his ties to Konoha is understandable. But randomly, and very specifically hyping up Jiraiya like that for no reason doesn't appear to make much sense. Even if Itachi was gassing him up a little bit, there appears to be some truth behind the matter.

The parallels between them even make this a bit more believable.
They both died around the same time in the manga, and also stalemated in the databooks with a 35.5. I'm not sure that there is any other clearer way to depict them as around the same level. So many people are blinded by Itachi, they discard what is being shown right in front of them lol.

Keep in mind this is sick Itachi. Obviously Itachi at full health would be stronger then Jiraiya, but the Itachi shown in this manga should be pretty close to J-man.

What I mean is he didn't hurt any people from Konoha after becoming an Akatsuki. Butchering his clan was his ultimate sacrifice. As for Jiraiya, we all know that he could never have a chance against Itachi. Itachi solos all.
