Itachi has one of the best backstories because it is the most ninja like. People give him grief because of what he did and rightly so. But what they tend to forget is that ninjas are trained assassins and will kill their own brothers mothers and fathers if ordered to do so by their superiors....

...whoch is exactly what Itachi did. Popular character? Yes. Most popular? Debatable.
