Here is what should have happend.

Itachi together with Obito kills the majority of Uchihas, the remaining is kept alive, among them Sasuke, Every info is revealed so that people dont get confused and Itachi remains a valuable asset working for the leaf.
Since Itachi knew of Obitos location he would then seek out him and take him out, helping the leaf in stopping the Akatsuki.
The Uchiha learns to not start a war. Genocide dousnt happen and Akatsuki dousnt get an extra member and Sasukes life is not destroyed, and Sasuke does not turn to the dark side.

1. Prevented a war he didnt need to prevent so that dousnt count, someone else could have done that.
2. deserted the village

He destroyed Sasukes life, brainwashing him and tormenting him, he killed all of the Uchiha even the elders, which was obviously not necessary and he helped the Akatsuki instead of stopping them from within.

Yet because he regrets his actions and is smart and strong he gets away with it?

If Itachi did nothing, Konoha would have exterminated the Uchiha clan anyways, including Sasuke.

So to prevent Sasuke's death, Itachi decided he will being the one pulling the curtain down on his clan.

I dont get the idea Kishi has painted Itachi as a hero at all. I think he potrays all the Uchiha the same, emotionally unstable people who do bad things that just look for logical reasons to do evil &$%@. That why they need the senju, to counter or rather balance out the negativity.
