How is that an insult? Itachi was referring to ALL people, including himself. It was pretty smart for Minato to even think of that possibility.

You're saying he's insulting minato's intelligence but minato was quite correct in assuming madara was dead.... Since madara was dead.
Where as itachi is bound to the illusion that madara is alive cuz obito played him like a fool.

It's all about the reasoning folks. Minato was just like everyone else and assumed Madara was dead because it was a long time ago, even Tsunade thought like that.
Itachi, on the other hand, used critical thinking skills and deduced that it was possible for Madara to live that long. He was right.

Itachi didn't even know who Obito was and Obito kept away from him. Shows you who he really thought was a bigger threat.

Was Madara alive years after he was thought to be dead? Was Madara alive during Minato's time? Did Madara live for over a century?
The reason Minato and everyone else were wrong was because they said it was impossible to live that long, but Madara did live that long, and Itachi figured out it was possible. Itachi considered the possibility unlike everyone else.
Again, Minato couldn't figure out who his own student was when he was right in front of him. Obito went straight for Minato without worrying, yet he stayed away from Itachi.

He, along with everyone else, thought that he was dead because they failed to consider that Madara had a way to live longer than an average person.
Minato didn't know that Madara had just died, he thought he had died during Hashirama's time, but he was wrong. Your logic doesn't make sense either because Madara was alive when Minato thought he was dead. He didn't just suddenly come to that conclusion when facing Obito. I.e Minato thought Madara was dead before he fought Obito.
Itachi didn't say that he was dead because he knew it would be within Madara's capabilities to live that long, and he could have.
Ok, yeah, I changed the subject a little. Wasn't intentionally though.
What I mean tp say overall though, is that Minato's reason for saying it wasn't Madara was shite,

Came back to life an then lived no longer than current onoki.The time difference between each of the hokages is small. Madara died 3 times before onnoki even died once, and onnoki is from second generation, being atm 20 years younger than him. Yet onnoki lived significantly longer than any of madara's lifetimes.
