if it wasnt 3 vs 1, then nagato would have been doing the basho tennin + human + chibaku combo on guess who? ITACHI. with no one to save him. itachi survived the first stage of the plan because he hung back and analysed deva powers and the shared vision. if it wasnt 3 vs 1, itachi would lack the firepower to harm chibaku. moreover kabuto didnt know nagatos a sensor, and thought shared vision would make up for nagatos cripple handicap. nagato himself would have had a strategy for that already set up. furthermore, nagato has two personal summons we never saw edo nagato use most likely because he couldnt (konan, gedo mazo). so massivly gimped nagato was caught off guard by itachi because his controller forgot hes a sensor and shoud have saw through totsuka in the dust cloud.
