So it seems that since day one, Sasuke's true potential was unknown by Itachi, a potential comparable to that of Madara himself by Tobirama [

No he didnt. He was telling sasuke for years he was the only one who would be able to defeat him. the underestimation i saw itachi make is when sasuke did not have MS and he didnt think his visual prowess was up to par, but broke out of tsukiyomi. He didnt think 1/22 of naruto could beat sasuke. he was talking to naruto like look after my brother. i leave him to you. only you can save him. He was suprised he can use susanoo because its rare. it has nothing to do with skill. not all uchiha with MS or EMS could use the technique. there are requirements for the technique. and Izanagi is a forbidden technique that would kill even itachi if he was not prepared for it. Izanagi is no joke. Itachi never underestimated sasuke, but sasuke's improvement did surprise him to say the least. Itachi always knew he would surpass him so to me thats not underestimation.

Wait a second. As far as I can tell, Itachi doesn't know that Naruto was using clones. And it's 14 clones actually.

But yes, it seems that Sasuke was underestimated even by his brother.

Edit: Whoops, looks like I was wrong. The guy above I believe is correct. I also forgot that Itachi also wanted Sasuke to become more powerful than him. That was one the reason I think Itachi wanted his younger brother to kill him.

Did you even read my thread? Itachi was only more genius. Sasuke always had the most powerful eyes as well as the most potential, something noticed by both Orochimaru and Obito. Hell even Kyubi noticed it. Only Itachi was blind not to see something like this, despite the fact having observed Sasuke awakening his Sharingan on a wimp at 7years old(so 1year before Itachi)

i kinda agree but dont.

i do believe itachi had great hopes for sasuke but didnt think he would be drenched in darkness, thus unlocking things he didnt except him to do.


I really dont like the idea of sasuke surpassing madara.

Sharagin has been downplayed and waterd down, obito with his 3 tome eye was able to keep up with gai sped and counter it effortlessly.


i realize i shouldnt compare obito to sasuke, but in this case you can.

Sharagin EMS should be well capable of keeping up with naruto period and seeing thur the clones.

I'm amazed to see how many didn't read the OP LOL. I agree with the premise of the thread. Itachi didn't know how much potential Sasuke was capable of, however he trusted Naruto as a friend of Sasuke, to stop him. Itachi was not going off power.

I definitely agree. Orochimaru was the first one to note that Sasuke's genius had the potential to surpass his own and his eyes held the power greater than his brother. It would be duly noted that Sasuke learned the Ritualistic Clan Katon attacks on his own or perfected them to be precise. Itachi already had a mentor. Obito also had an immense interest in Sasuke, which is why he endeavoured hard to pluck Itachi out of the picture. It's truly a shame that arc and plot-catalyst-device is long forgotten by Kishimoto.

But, there is a small part of your hypothesis that I am not so passionate about. Itachi - as cliched as this may sound or seem - was more adamant about the strength of Naruto's love and unbending feelings for Sasuke. He had faith in him in this regard as he considered Naruto to be the one after him to shoulder Sasuke's burden. I doubt it was only about power.
