He died because he was a good guy and Kishimoto wanted him to. He has already filled his purpose in the story. If you mean he died to plot, as in no one killed him, then yes I suppose he did. But other characters have died in this manner as well, including Nagato.

Itachi was created for te plot in the first place! Why do people think of Kishi as a mad squirrel with add writing a novel. He has all this shit laid out. He knew the end before te first manga came out. He just didn't tell anyone because he would be hounded for spoilers
FYI Itachi was also gay and never got to come out of the closet. I wonder why Kishi said he "forgot" about the whole plot between him and Shisui when it's pretty obvious he didn't. Probably had advisors against making badass characters openly gay. "Forgot" about it's his lover... Lol

yet has the intelligence of a 5 year old at age 21. he made some of the dumbest mistakes in the manga which resulted in catastrophic war and death
who brutally and sadistically tortured an innocent child, betryed and condemned konhoa to destruction, and murdered 6 jinchurikis, even giving nukes to 10 terrorists

the alliance was not even remotely threatened by kabuto compared to the threat posed by obito and gedo. kabutos edos for the most part had already been defeated. so they saved themselves.. in fact ending ET when he did condemned the alliance to being mostly massacred, and neji/gai dying.
wrong on both counts. he didnt give a shit about konoha and betrayed it for akatsuki. he died pointlessly making sure sasuke would stay evil and keep on hurting inncoent people. he wanted to give sasuke unbeatable powers so sasuke could use them on konoha. itahci is one of the most self defeating suicidal people ever.
