So what if they were sleeping? They are supposed to be shinobi. They should always be on guard. If all it took to kill high level ninja was to sneak in at night then many ninja would have been killed by their enemies.

They know the 3rd hokage is the 1st and 2nd hokage's student. So some of the members had to be strong enough take on Obitio and Itachi at the time.

I believe that a common misconception,Itachi and Obito relied on a secret surprise attack at night. Relativity none or none at all were ready for such an attack.Pair that with Obitos Kumai it makes for quite efficient killing not to mention the uchiha district was on the outskirts of the village which also aided them being that it would take time for help to come from the inner village.All proving the fact that it was a well planned attack,not a simple case of 2 vs the entire clan.
