Itachi told Sasuke that he killed the clan to gain power.
He also expressed anger towards the clan for not recognizing his skills.
When he met Sasuke he told him he needed hatred to become more powerful and he showed him nothing but hatred.
He told him to kill his best friend, break that bond of love, just for the sake of power.
And he told him, he only spared his life cus he could gain power and become a worthy measurment for Itachi's own power.
This was the villain we were lead to believe existed.
Then Kishi flip flopped.
Itachi wanted Sasuke to be strong, because he cared about him, the reason he wanted Sasuke to gain strenght was out of love.
Probably because he knew Sasuke was in danger because of his clanmembership and Danzo's watchful eye.
Itachi didn't kill his clan to gain power, or because he had outgrown them, but because he had a different philosophy.
His anger towards the clan had to do with, differences in philosophy, probably, not because he felt the clan was a hindrance to his growth in power-
Itachi didn't have resentment towards konohagakure.
Instead he probably loved his village.
Itachi wasn't strong enough to take on the entire clan by himself, hence he took help from Tobidara.
If he had truly wanted to test his strenght and prove he had outgrown his clan he would have attempted to kill everybody himself.
But he didn't do it out of testing his capacity.
And it bothered him to do it, he wasn't cold blooded, he cried during it.
He never wanted Sasuke to test his own power, because he always planned to be revenged by Sasuke.
My conclusion is that while other characters such as Tobidara, cared alot about power, despite Itachi being a strong character he was never inteterested in gaining strenght.
He never cared what he was capable of, he never cared to be the strongest or the best.
He had certain goals and he did what he could do achieve those goals. But he never cared about "winning".
Hence he didn't care about his reputation being destroyed.
Really it was just luck that he was powerful enough to reach his goals, because his goal was never power, he just used whatever power he had for the sake of love.
The difference between Madara and Itachi are therefore huge in character.
Because Madara is a character defined by his strenght, he thinks weakness is ugly.
Yet Itachi is a character that never cared about power. It was almost destiny that he had enough power to do what he wanted to do.
Because as a kid, he didn't need to fight for survival, like Madara, he spent his time trying to understand the world, like Hiruzen said he did.
This was Itachi's defining characteristics.
Not that he was all powerful, in fact he was a pretty pathetic person.
Backstabbing his own family for what he believed was more important.
His measurement is not in what he was capable of, but what he wanted.
He also expressed anger towards the clan for not recognizing his skills.
