This thread is in response to a comment of an earlier thread I made:

Hashi’s comment on Itachi being a greater Shinobi should not be taken as a full out compliment. Really, it is a comment from Hashi on how he personally did not meet the definition of a shinobi. It’s kind of a backhanded compliment on Itachi being a good shinobi.

According to Zabuza, a shinobi is a tool. A shinobi should be one who can completely cut himself off from emotion (Think of Danzo & Root). To which at the time of death Zabuza admitted he was not a good shinobi for not being able to cut off all emotions.

Hashi upon hearing what Itachi did to his clan says Itachi was a greater shinobi than him because he was capable of cutting away his emotions to kill his whole clan(Read chapters 619-620). Hashi is not so much praising Itachi with these words, as much as he admitting that he would not have been able to do such a thing (fully cut of his emotions), and I think he is alluding to the fact that at the moment of truth, he did not kill Madara during their last battle. I think he is admitting that he let Madara live, because he was not capable of severing his emotions for his old friend.

Did you read what the insult was, or just reply to the thread name?

Actually, Zabuza's definition of a Shinobi was based on the bloody mist era. The bloody Mist was led by Madara principles when he was Mizukage.

Didn't Kakashi's father suized because he let his emotions for his comrades get the better out of him?!
Or just look at Sai and other root-members. By the definition that a true shinobi closes his emotions deep inside the op makes a good point!
Hashirama probably knew that Madara hadn't died. Hm

Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Getting to know adult and young hashi., I can picture him letting madara live, but somehow limiting his power greatly so he was not a threat.

I can see the Madara part being true just because my understanding of what Hashi said to Itachi.

Hashi said "I do not think I could have done that if I was in Itachi's position. He was able to put the village above all, etc. etc."

I don't agree with the cutting away the emotions part.

Itachi cried, proven during Sasuke flashback.

Itachi kept Sasuke alive, proving he loved his clan and wanted to set up the Uchiha for future success through "Sasuke, the avenger."

Keeping Sasuke alive was against what Danzou and probably the other elders wanted, but Itachi did it and made sure they followed through with keeping Sasuke alive.

Instead of cutting away his emotions, he was able to logically see that the elimination of the clan was better than the clan rebelling. Like Hiruzen said, Itachi had kage level thinking @ age 7.

Do make a good point but if everyone thought like the first Hokage and let dangerous people live.. Then the world would be destroyed. Thats like the US army, allowing a terroist to keep doing what he does.

itachi did what an hokage would not do which was turn his back on his clan

i think he deserves the full hype IMo

note: the hype doesn't say itachi is stronger, just a better shinobi in terms of mentality

In the end, however, you interpret it, is quite irrelevant. Defining a "good" shinobi is different, Kishi has shown this by countless definition all across the manga. From villains, heroes, corrupt shinobi, etc.. Sasuke asks what is a shinobi? Well even this cannot be answered. You need to find your own way. Just like Naruto did. Sasuke is yet to find his, which is truly, why he is talking to the kages.
If Itachi was a better shinobi than Hashirama or not, is just a matter of opinion and definition. It cannot be defined. We simply know Hashiramas own meaning, but no "great" shinobi, would think of himself as a better shinobi than his fellow shinobi.

That wasn't a backhanded compliment at all. He's saying Itachi put his own emotions aside for the better of the leaf, something Hashirama himself couldn't do. Itachi being a better shinobi=compliment.

It is still a compliment.

Itachi didnt cut himself from his emotions, he was very well living with them, but he decided to shoulder that pain so that he could do what was needed to protect the world back then. You can see from his suffering, that he wasnt in any shape or form, cut from his emotions, he was in agony.

Jiraiya's definition of a shinobi ; A shinobi is someone who endures, and doesnt stop no matter how hard it is.

Itachi is the epitome of that definition, as despite the hard choices he had to make and the harsh path he was facing, he still pulled through for the greater good.

So yeah it clearly is a compliment, specially giving the way Hashirama spells it out to Sasuke, making it like Sasuke should be proud of him. The other translation was also saying ; Someone like him puts a shinobi like to me to shame. Hashirama is just saying that Itachi did needed things that a very few amount of people would have been able to do yet alone at 13 years old.

And like you said, im starting to believe that in his heart or heart, Hashirama may have known Madara was still alive, if that is the case, it shows that not being able to endure like Itachi did has quite devastating consequences... Some people argue with Itachi's way of doing things... but if Sarutobi and Danzo couldnt find an other alternative... Itachi who knew Tobi was lurking arround on top of all the shit going on must have thought the same.

Quick question how the hell did itachi and the first hokage know each other again? Is not to far for him to be alive since I think he would at least died around tusnade was a teen or 9 years old. Then again Itachi was in the war? My brain hurts.....

They dont know each other.... Hashirama just judged Itachi based on Sarutobi's hype and Sasuke's speech on how Itachi gave his life to protect the shinobi world even given the agony he was put through.
