people remember the Sage but not his mother that ate the forbidden fruit and single-handedly put an end to what appeared to be a world wide conflict ?

If it weren't for his mother, the Juubi wouldn't have gone on a rampage. His mother should be remembered more in infamy than as a god.

He's remembered for stopping what his mother caused.

-taught the world how to use chakra
-sealed the Juubi within himself
-created the moon
-split the juubi into the 9 bijuu
-was the father of the two greatest clans

and even then most people thought he was a myth, it was only recently in the story his existence was confirmed.

Nobody, excluding Madara and the bijuu knew about the god tree, they just knew about the Sage sealing the Juubi, and passed that as a myth
